Carlisle &
District Speakers Club Success at Border Area Speakers Clubs Annual
Contests Sunday 29th January, 2006 - Queen’s Hotel Lockerbie
Carlisle and District Speakers Club members had outstanding success
at the Border Area Contests on Sunday 29th January 2006 and all
three contestents now go forward to the North-west District contests
at East Kilbride in March.
Speech Competition: 1st Gordon Little
(6 competitors)
Evaluation Competition: 1st
Christine Shuttleworth
(6 competitors)
Topics Speaking Competition:
2nd Davidson Bell
(6 competitors)
Speech Competition
(Speak for 8 minutes):
• Gordon’s motivational speech
was outstanding and demonstrated the full range of attributes and
techniques required by a skilled public speaker. Gordon was the
clear winner.
Evaluation Speech
(Give a 4 minute evaluation of a demonstration speaker):
• In being placed 1st - Christine
gave a truly expert, constructive evaluation of a demonstration
speaker who was expected to apply the full range of skills in using
the voice to dynamic effect in a speech. This included tips on how
the speaker may improve technique.
Topics Speech
(Give an immediate 3 minute impromptu speech on a topic given only
at the point of speaking.)
• Davidson had to immediately think
on his feet and came second with a focussed speech on the given
subject - “Cats Eyes”.
• By virtue of their success - Gordon, Christine and Davidson
now compete in the North-west District Contests at East Kilbride
on Sunday 12th March.
• The winners at the North-west district
contests will then compete at the National Association of Speakers
Clubs contests on 28th, 29th, 30th April.
• The National Finals this
year will be held in Carlisle at the Swallow Hilltop Hotel.
Carlisle & District Speakers Club meet on the 1st & 3rd
Monday of each month at Morton Community Centre
There are six clubs in the Border Area (Carlisle,
Annan, Stranraer, West Coast, Cockermouth, Dumfries) - and the winners
of each Club contest competes at the Border Area contests.
